Touching Lives makes education, mental health and art accessible to children and communities from humble backgrounds, with a focus on the self-evolution of both the giver and the receiver.
For every child, every parent, and every community to experience the power of learning, healing and art, and to contribute to global consciousness through their personal transformation.
To provide safe, nurturing and regenerative spaces for education, healing and art, so individuals can move toward a better quality of life, break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, walk the path of self-realization, and become ambassadors of peace and change.
Touching Lives was born from the understanding that social consciousness and spiritual consciousness are deeply connected. To keep this connection alive, inner journeys became essential, and three mantras formed the foundation of the organisation.
The inward journey. In 2009, we developed the Self-Work* Approach, a practical philosophy rooted in the belief that no matter what, there is always a divine, cosmic, practical possibility to work on oneself. It nurtures a sense of safety, belonging and purpose.
Service as a way of being. We serve with humility, presence and long-term commitment, because serving is our own need, our own path of evolution.
Daily practice and discipline. Learning, healing and growth are lifelong processes, for our students, our team, and everyone who walks with us.
These five values are magical. They keep us bonded, connected with our souls, our tribes, with each other and with the universe. Whether one is a student, a teacher or a volunteer, we all love to be a part of these values.
We believe it is completely our need to serve, than saying we serve the needy.
We do not define people by their circumstances or place them into limiting categories. The simple fact that every person is born on this planet means that each of us is privileged, worthy, and full of potential.
We focus our energy on creating new possibilities, solutions, and paths that empower people to make their own choices. We believe each one of us can evolve.
We believe in sharing. We share our resources, wisdom, knowledge and funds with fellow travelers to stay grounded in our practice and contribute to the eco-system.
We ask every day: How much am I evolving by being a part of Touching Lives? How much of my soul is living its purpose? We continue the inward journey through Self-Work, Seva and Sadhana.
What began as one young woman's inner calling has grown into a movement of learning and healing, while staying deeply rooted in the same communities for over two decades.
Sonia Mackwani, aged 21, begins the work of Touching Lives, driven by an inner calling to serve. It takes shape as a poetry association alongside grassroots social-work activities.
Project Sparsh takes shape on the streets of Churchgate, Mumbai, blending activities, vocations and holiday camps, supported by the Children’s Toy Foundation.
Project Sanskriti brings a long-term, play-based learning model into government schools, NGOs, hostels and community spaces.
Registered as a Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, funded by Sonia’s savings from writing two books.
The first community center is built within the community itself, a collaborative project with children and their parents.
The first Learning Center opens with 60 students; a mothers’ awareness and Bachat-Khata savings initiative begins; and the Touching Lives Media & Films initiative is founded.
The Meta-Quantum Learning Model takes shape, along with Tithing, mentoring support to other organisations, and Teacher Training with NGOs and schools across rural and urban India.
A move to a bigger Learning Center; reach grows to 120+ students a year with an in-house integrated curriculum and a growing team.
Four community centers running; the first batch of college students becomes community leaders, teaching in the centers.
The first Mothers’ Self-Work and Healing batch begins.
During COVID, all programs move online and reach students pan-India, learning and healing continuing despite limited access and resources.
A new Learning Center opens, with creative classrooms, a library and a healing room, a safe and inspiring space for children.
350+ children, youth and women supported every year, with programs reaching young people across India through online platforms.
“Touching Lives was born from one understanding, that social consciousness and spiritual consciousness are deeply connected. It is completely our need to serve, than saying we serve the needy.
When you engage in self-work, you begin to shape a path of self-healing, one that allows you to create a safe space within yourself. From safety grows a sense of belonging, where trust deepens as we become its source. And from belonging arises a sense of purpose that is honest, inclusive, expansive, and evolutionary.
For over two decades, this inner work has guided our outer work, with children, women, communities, and everyone who has walked with us. We hold space for two journeys: the journey of finding a master, and the journey of going deeper once the master is found.”
